Pay statements are a great way to share the information that is needed for employees to understand how and what they are being paid as well as what money is going where. Each employer may generate pay stubs differently, but they should all have the basics included.
Your pay stub should always break down how much you were paid each period. If you are paid by the hour you can count on your pay stub breaking down how many hours you are being paid for on the check. From the overall payment number, there are going to be deductions taken out of your check.
The deductions you can count on seeing in your pay stub include things like taxes, retirement, insurance, etc. Depending on which type of job you have, there are a number of different items that could be itemized on your pay stub. This is a number you will want to check on frequently. If a mistake is going to be made on your pay check this is usually where it is going to be found. If you have questions about where money went your employer should be able to help answer your question.
Year to date (YTD) numbers are also found on pay stubs. These numbers break down how much money you have made from your employer since the beginning of the year. If you are a salaried employee, it is nice to be able to watch the number increase and watch the number that you are contracted to make each year.
Pay stubs are a great way to manage how much money you are making minus the different factors that are taken out of your gross pay. The basics should be included on all stubs, but some employers include much more in depth stubs than others.
